We spent our weekend surrounded by Medieval splendour. Cressing Temple Barns are the most beautiful buildings, an English Heritage Site, and this time I think that I have got the name right, although I do believe that they were something to do with the Knights Templar in the distant past.
Absolutely glorious, there are probably about 3 or 4 of these Barns and then some open sided ones and a walled garden, and a tea room, and inside the barns were just as spectacular.
Some how my photography seems to diminish the glory of these buildings. The trees that they are built from have been dated to about 800. The one that we were in, was called the Barley Barn and rebuilt in 1400 and again in recent years. It was a nice place to spend a weekend, the only thing that we lacked were customers for our Antiques.
I am glad that we went, but we would seriously have to think about standing this Fair again. I think that we will write it down to experience and a nice weekend away, rather than a profitable exercise.
On the way home, we meandered rather and called in at Ely, a place that we have both wanted to visit for a long time. We have often passed it by, seeing it in the distance, standing proud above the Fenland but have always been on the way somewhere and never had time to linger until now.
Ely is amazing, above the main street, rises the Cathedral. Walk through an alley and there it stands in all its glory. It must be a joy to nip out to the shops and be overseen by such a lovely building. Not light and ethereal like some, but gray and solid and lovely shapes.
We really didn’t have time to go inside properly but we stood in the entrance and cricked our necks looking at the beautiful ceilings and windows, and we have vowed to go back and enjoy it at leisure.
And to complete our weekend of lovely architecture, 20 miles from home, following our Sat Nav’s shortcut, we came through a village called Kings Norton, a place that we have known forever, but never had the need to visit and set across a field on the edge of the village was the most delicious little church.
A good few days, we didn’t make any money but we feasted our eyes on lovely things and count ourselves lucky!
